Getting the most from your Campaign Team

Your campaign team is the most valuable asset you have when campaigning. No amount of money or time can help you if you haven’t invested in developing your staffers and ground team to make the most of those two resources. Here we look at getting the most from your campaign team.


Setting KPI’s

Goals: It really is all about those #goals guys. Start each day with a target in mind for how many canvasses you want to be completed. Remember this isn’t as easy as just knocking , you have to factor in people who aren’t at home, call backs etc.

Surveys completed: Same rule applies here, set a target and always consider what will happen if you don’t meet your targets but more importantly, how you will reward canvassers when they do meet their targets.

Commitments from voters to vote: While counting on voters is the name of the game, be aware people can lie to you. Sometimes when you are standing face to face with a voter, they will tell you whatever they think you want to hear. Be aware of this. Granted, you are not a mind reader but take into account their body language and you should be able to hazard a pretty good guess.

Onboarding new volunteers: Sometimes having an efficient team means that you need to increase your team members. Bringing in fresh faces helps keep the team motivating as the dynamic keeps changing.

Fundraising targets: If campaigning was all about canvassing then life would be a hell of a lot easier, unfortunately at the back of your mind, the echoes of financial burdens reside. Getting your team to hit fundraising targets can ease the stress everyone on the team.

Tracking their efforts

Monitoring canvassers in real time is something which many of users want and also need. It motivates the people out on the campaign trail to keep up the good work and also keeps the staff back in HQ on their toes.

At the end of each day, the canvassers can review the work they have done and see where they gained or lost time.

Then, at the end of each week, we strongly advise having a team meeting to review where things went well and remember always keep the focus on the positives.

Motivational techniques

Make it fun ­and set up a league table:

If you are going to all this effort to track your canvasser's work, then why not make a game out of it and set up a fantasy league for canvassing. It’s amazing what a bit of competition can do to some people

Be clear on what the campaign mission is:

Nothing is more motivating than knowing you have to deliver a message, it makes you educate yourself first and foremost and then pushes you to communicate this message to the public.

Show canvassers the progress they are making with data analytics:

Providing your team with insights is what makes the age of technology so unique. Feedback and critique done properly is what boosts team morale.

Developing leadership

Assign your Canvass leaders as your captains in the field

Their job as a leader is to provide a clear path that your team can follow. Your team also must understand why the goals you have set are valuable in the grand scheme of the campaign

Empower all volunteers

Volunteers give their time to support your race or event, the least you can do is make it worth their while. Remember that volunteers may have experience and knowledge of a broad range of skills, but don’t be afraid to help them add to their skillset. Give them jobs they can excel at and even offer training to them.

At the end of the day make sure you personally thank each volunteer for their contribution, check in with them for their immediate feedback and ask them about any issues that arose during the day. It’s a nice touch to give volunteers a small momento to show your appreciation of their time. Remember treat them well and they’ll come back.
