One of the most commonly asked questions we get at Ecanvasser after political campaign software advice and canvassing app advice is how to set up a Facebook page. We often forget that many people may not get into politics until their later years and suddenly they are bombarded with all the ways they can gather support through social media platforms.
Having a Facebook page is great from both a personal and professional point of view. Using it as a personal space whereby you have a private account so you can connect with your grassroots, wish people happy birthday, share photos and keep up to date with your relatives who live halfway around the world is refreshing.
From a professional point of view, Facebook has the capability to help your brand grow beyond any conceivable idea. Your campaign message may just go viral if pushed in the right direction and this is why Facebook is seen as a catapult to success for many up and coming leaders.
The following document will illustrate the simple steps to setting up your first candidate profile page. Basic but so important.
Login to your current Facebook account or set one up if you don’t already have one. To set one up, merely go to https://www.facebook.com/ and click Sign up
When you reach the main newsfeed, click on the drop-down menu where your name is and click on Create Page.
You will next be able to choose which type of page you want to create. For this example, we shall be picking Public Figure.
You will then be asked to enter the name of the Candidate.
You are now on an empty candidate page with nothing more than
You now need to enter a profile picture which for a candidate is usually a headshot and a cover photo, which may be the party slogan, the city you are representing or a nice landscape shot.
To finish off your page, you should go to the drop down that says "More~" next to the Follow button.
Under "Edit Your Details", you will have two separate sections to fill in, General and Contact.
Under the General section, add a brief bio and category.
Contact info is very important, so make sure you add your phone number, email, website links and any other social media platforms you are on.
If you are already on Facebook, you can invite any of your current friends to Like your page. If you do not have any friends, you can use the search bar at the top of the page and find your political party or anyone else you feel would be interested in your candidacy and ask them to share it.
Sharing a page is equally as powerful as a Like as it opens up your page to a new audience each time it is shared. Facebook’s currency is based on Likes and Shares so this is how you will be measuring your success from now on.
